Puella Pedens
DIAfilm I made for a DIA-film screening event at WORM Piratebay, Rotterdam - it is based on a folktale I found through professional storyteller Csenge Virág Zalka’s website that collects folktales with a possible feminist reading (Feminista magyar népmesék), and from a book, Géczi Lajos’s Folktales and Legends from Uzhhorod (Ungi népmesék és mondák). I liked how the tone is silly but has a simple and relevant message about expectations towards women.
As for diafilms - I learnt only recently that making children’s entertainment like this in a slideshow format was most popular in Eastern Europe, with many big manufacturers in the region. The medium was used globally, but mostly for educational purposes instead of an alternative for cartoons. I remember the old metal projector we had with the film rolls in their casings, each having a different fairytale with captions on them, reading it out together was very cozy.
Digital and collage.
