About me
If you turn towards the sunrise and you walk seven days and nights, over the sea and beyond the glass mountains, you reach a deep, dark forest. You may then close your eyes and turn around three times, feeling the world and creatures around you sway, the trees and grass dance, and secrets stir up and unsettle. As you open your eyes, it is as if a thick curtain of fog has fallen away and the hidden nature of the world reveals itself to you.
I’m Zoé Kovács, an illustrator from Hungary, currently based in Rotterdam. My dearest hobby is researching Eastern European, and specifically Hungarian folk traditions. I find folk art compelling because the authorless, nameless works that constitute the bulk of this genre of art have the power to be extremely intimate and personal in their nature, but at the same time they’re able to achieve a universal relatability with their simplicity and rawness.
I believe my interest in the subject can be felt in all my work. I take special care in my work to accentuate its emotional core, its storytelling, the vibrant colors and the explorations of the human soul and body. My favorite media include, colored pencils, crayons, aquarelle and risograph printing.
Previously worked with Poetry International Festival Rotterdam, Willem de Kooning Academy, PIROS Animation and Arizona State University.
